More than a NUT MILK BAG

Almost every day I get some new, great feedback from new members of More than a Nut Milk Bag family. This morning's still has me smiling . . .so let me share what Christine had to say:

"I made my first batch of almond milk today and I was shocked to see how easy it was! My goodness, why aren't we all making this ourselves instead of buying expensive cartons with dubious added ingredients?!"

Getting to Raw : toward better eating habits

A work in progress

Like each of us, this article is a work in progress ... and if you think you have a milestone we left out, let us know!

Raw on the Road Tips

Each time I travel, I perfect things a bit more with new techniques and ideas for those times when I'm away from home and want to eat healthy. Here's a few suggestions I hope can help you feel at home on the road.

Vote for Full Food Ingredient Disclosure

"If you control the oil you control the country;
if you control food, you control the population."
– Henry Kissinger, 1970

For as long as I can remember, we've been waging war on everything from the Koreans and Al Qaeda to Drugs and Litter. I suppose it appeals to our American martial nature to declare "war on ____" -- you fill in the blank. I'm hesitant to call this Food Fight for disclosure of Genetically Modified (GM) ingredients a war, but if that's what it takes to get Americans to reclaim responsibility for what they put in their bodies, I guess I'm willing. I'm all about folks listening and acting on this critical issue. Most countries have GM policies -- at least labeling, and in many cases exclusion of GM-containing products -- and citizens and farmers are taking to the streets to fight this battle in places like Haiti. It may sound dramatic, but honestly, the future -- for ourselves, our children and the planet -- is at stake.

PEEETS: More about Continua and Low-hanging Fruit

In a recent newsletter I talked about 'Low Hanging Fruit' and 'The Continuum', and now I want to share a mnemonic device I use to help myself delve a little deeper into my own personal well-being. Some of you may be Starbucks fans, but I'm a Peets Coffee gal myself, so I'm going to stretch that a little into PEEETS: Prioritize, Educate, Eat, Exercise, Take action, seek Self-mastery.

Low Hanging Fruit: Sweeteners

A great way to begin is to take new thoughts and ideas one at a time, and slowly build a foundation on them. With a firm footing established, you can start rebuilding. Here's an example:

Start with Low Hanging Fruit -- things which seem easy to incorporate.

Identify, and then start working your way up, the Continuum.

Food Fight

Not too many things rile me up, but the food fight between Agribiz and the Raw-and-Organics underway here in America and around the world has got my dander up. We need to get the issues out in the open and start discussing them honestly. As long as Agribiz keeps hiding the truth, we need to be ever vigilant, and share our discoveries. We need to be gathering facts and preparing ourselves to fight Agribiz and its governmental enablers whenever they erode health in the interests of profit. For me, the genetic engineering of what's on my plate, and the plates of my neighbors and friends, is the most important issue going. Don't we have the inalienable right to know what we're putting in our mouths?

Label Reading 101

Those of you who follow my studies in my newsletter know I have recently completed a fascinating and informative course offered by Cornell on Plant Based Nutrition. For me, one memorable highlight was a presentation by dietitian, nutritionist, and chef Jeff Novick entitled "Should I eat that?"

You wouldn't suspect it to look at her, but Brenda Hinton has a few surprises up her shirt sleeves.

That German chocolate cake of hers for instance -- the one with the velvety chocolate frosting and light-as-air layers that she made last week for her 30th wedding anniversary -- well it wasn't baked in an oven.
